It’s time for another bento sketch book!
Bento #46: Totoro with cherry blossoms
The drawing wasn’t completely finished, but I like how this bento came out. I had a hard time filling the space in the middle part of bento, but it worked out fine in the end. Totoro inari-zushi was fun to make too.
As you can see, I only finished the half of the sketch, I was too lazy to draw them.
But instead, I wrote down a list of what I was going to make “ano-niku” with.
Bento #48: : Laputa robot with cherry blossom
Originally, I was going to put him lying straight in the bento box, but I realized that he was too long and I’d have to make him really small… So I changed to the angle of his body so his body would be the same size as the inari. I didn’t draw too many details for this one, but I did a detailed drawing of the fox-squirrel as reference on a different piece of paper.
For this bento, I only drew one Patapon. I was going to make a more complicated monster, so I drew it, but I ended up making the easier monster. I drew a round shaped tree from the game in the sketch, but after putting Patapons, I ended up making trees with snowpeas.
Bento #50: Prinny
I didn’t trace it, but I basically copied the cover design of the Prinny game for this sketch. I drew many characters for this bento in the sketch, but I couldn’t even make the half of them. I really wanted to make the tomato head worm though.

We still had tons of leftovers from Cracker Barrel, so no need to make bento. =/
Instead, here are some sketches!
Bento #41: Ryuk from Death Note
I mostly focused on Ryuk’s face, so not much is going on around him. As I mentioned, I did draw Shido and Rem in the background first, but erased them later. I usually don’t erase anything from my sketchbook even if I didn’t have the time to make it. But this time, it was too distracting, and I couldn’t draw Ryuk’s wings with them in the background.
Just like any other Totoro bento, this drawing was done in less than 5 minutes. I love drawing Totoro. It just makes me smile.
But I did look up for the logo for Studio Ghibli which appears in the beginning of every Studio Ghibli film as a reference. (The line drawing of Totoro in profile, with chibi-Totoro on his head)
This simple sketches of bunch of square heads in line took FOREVER to draw. I just couldn’t come up with a good composition for this, so I ended up making just the heads. I should’ve realized that the hole punch was much smaller than the eyes I drew for Castle Crashers. Then I wouldn’t have made the head so big, and the eyes would’ve been the perfect size. =/ And as you can see in the drawing, I was going to put bunch of animal orbs in this bento, but I was obviously delusional to plan such a thing. So instead of spending 3 more hours to make the animal orbs for this bento, I decided to make a bento just with animal orbs.
Whoops, seems like I didn’t paste the animal orb cutouts on this page… I’ll update the picture of my drawing later.
Bento #45: Pink Castle Crasher with Tom Fulp
I drew this Pink Castle Crasher after watching the video of someone playing the game, “Castle Crashing, the Beard.” Because I suck at the game and I kept dying before I got to Pink Castle Crasher. It turns out the most common Pink Castle Crasher doesn’t have a ” <3 ” on his/her head. He/She’s just like a regular Castle Crasher, in pink, with <3 on his/her chest. But I like my Pink Castle Crasher with a ” <3 .”

It was raining all weekend (except for the couples of hours of sun peeking through the clouds on Saturday)
I stayed home, cleaned the house, and worked on a new project. I’ll post a picture of it when it’s done. ![]()
So in short, no how-to today, and I’ll post some pages from my sketch book.
Bento #32: Where the wild things are (left side)
It took me forever to do this sketch… This wasn’t an original composition or anything. I tried to copy the existing drawing, and it still took a really long time. On top of that, I drew the wild things waaay too big. There were too many detailed parts I had to use seaweed for, so I had to draw their face on a separate paper to use it to cut seaweed.
Bento #32: Where the wild things are (right side)
This one also took me a really long time to draw. I just couldn’t make Calivn & Hobbes look like them at all. The style is very unique and hard to copy, and I think also it was because their faces were facing to the right. (usually, it’s easier to draw a face facing to the left if you’re right handed) I should’ve done something on the croquette. (the bottom “ground” part)
Bento #34: Battlestar Galactica
Not too much going on in this drawing. I just had to simplify the Cylon head, to mold rice and cut the lines from seaweed. I didn’t plan anything special to fill the gap between food, thus the broccoli forest. T_T I regret being so lazy, but I especially liked how Cylon head came out. I should’ve also tried to make the corners look better.
The drawing looks pretty scary now… Tingle standing with bunch of heads floating around him. I just didn’t think I could make a body for each Tingle, but I had to make sure that I had the face of each Tingle drawn for reference. I also drew the details on his belt and clock. The flowers were from his game, but I didn’t have the time to do it.

No bento blog today, but I’d like to show more sketches from my bento sketch book. Most of the notes are in Japanese, but you can still see what went wrong and what went right.
Bento #28: Toon Link!
Something is different about him (in both my sketch and the actual bento)… Maybe his mouth? Maybe his head wasn’t big enough? As I explained in my blog post of this bento, I originally wanted to have Tingle in this bento, but I didn’t have time to do it… But I like how the clothes on him look like real fabrics.
Bento #29: Moyashimon!
What a half-assed job I did for this sketch… It seemed so easy that I totally underestimated this. Some of bacteria were made up by me, and didn’t even have face on them in the sketch. The bento looked cute, but I wasn’t too happy about it since it wasn’t very accurate.
Bento #30: Rayman Raving Rabbids 2!
This bento came out pretty much exactly like the sketch. I doodled Rayman and a toilet outside the bento just in case I had extra time to make them, but when do I ever have extra time when I make bento? NEVER.
Bento #31: Totoro Snowman!
I got lazy and didn’t draw snow in the sketch, so the sketch doesn’t look like anything that interesting. Totoro is my safety-blanket bento, and just drawing a sketch of Totoro makes me happy.
Besides, this bento didn’t have that much details either, so I did this sketch in about 5 minutes. Gotta love Totoro!

It’s Sunday! but since it’s holiday season and all, no how-to today… Sorry!
But instead, I’m going to post some of the sketches I’ve done for my bento. If you compare the sketches and finished bento, you can see what I intended to do but couldn’t do.
Before I started doing sketches for bento, I kind of just filled the bento box as I made it, and it was so hard to do.
Half of the time, I didn’t know which food I’d be using until that morning. Also I’d often just throw food in to fill spaces. It was frustrating and the results didn’t please me at all… So I started drawing sketches for bento.
I gotta tell you, these sketches help a LOT. The rectangular shape is the same size as the bottom part of bento box, so I know how big the characters should be. (I still make characters a little too big though) I write down what color each character & decoration is, what kind of food I’ll be using, and what order I’ll put it together, etc… Unfortunately, almost all notes are in Japanese, but you get the idea.
I’ll post the sketches from bento “Spirited Away bento” up to “Bento #22 Farm bento” today. I’ll post more sketches in the future.
Sorry for a loooong post. I got a new laptop, and I haven’t installed photoshop yet, so I can’t do side-by-side comparison. (Click on any pictures to see bigger pictures on my flickr account.)
Bento #12: Spirited Away!
Originally, Kaonashi was supposed to be in the bento, but BouNezumi and Haedori got a little too big and my boyfriend wanted four meat balls, so I decided not to make him in the last minute.
Bento #13: God Warrior vs Ohmu Stampede from Nausicaa!
I was going to put the little Ohmu (which Nausicaa rescued) in front of God Warrior, but I made other Ohmu a little bigger than I had planned, so I ended up not putting him in.
Bento #14: Katamari Damacy!
Sorry this sketch doesn’t look exactly as exciting as the bento… but the long list on the left side is the list of the ideas of food I had planned to make. (in Japanese) I didn’t make all of them though. Also I was going to make “Katamari meter” (it tells you how big your katamari is) on the left upper corner, but it didn’t fit.
Bento #15: Super Smash Bros. Brawl!
The sketch is pretty much like the final bento. I added more stars in in the end because the background looked a little lonely.
Bento #16: Sleeping Totoro!
After I drew Totoro, I decided to place Totoro diagonally in the bento box. Also I was going to put 2-D Mei on his stomach, but since I Totoro was very 3-D, I didn’t think it’d fit well in this bento. (Besides, I don’t like putting human characters in my bento too much.)
Non-bento #2: Shadow of the Colossus Cheese Toast!
This is a copy of the actual sketch. I traced the original sketch before I used it to cut seaweed, so I’d have a backup even if I messed it up. Scanner? Printer? No, I traced it with a pencil. I’m old-school like that.
Bento #17: Laputa Robot with Fox Squirrel!
I actually did more detailed sketch of Laputa Robot on a different page on my sketchbook, but haven’t scanned it yet.
Bento #18: Jiji from Kiki’s Delivery Service!
I was going to put a broom on the left side of Jiji, but I ran out of time. T_T
Bento #19: Professor Layton!
I had to make sure you could actually do the puzzle in this bento. Each food got a slightly bigger in the actual bento, but it was still very solvable!
Bento #20: Portal Companion Cube & Cake!
Notice that Turrets have slits in the drawing?
Bento #21: Bioshock Big Daddy & Little sister!
The alphabet letters are for each color/food. A = gray (rice and black sesame seed), B = redish brown (hamburg), C = orangish brown (fried potato), D = gray (konnyaku). I was going to make the drill with different food (konnyaku) at first, but I ended up using rice w/ black sesame seed because it looked pretty good.
And as you can see in the drawing, I really wanted to put the flying security bot…
Bento #22: Farm bento!
No big difference between the sketch and the final bento. I didn’t realize that I had written down the recipe for Soboro (ground beef cooked with soy sauce, sake and sugar) on the right bottom corner.
