Okay, so after making bavarois with the mold, I decided to bake a cake with it!
Non-bento #24: fun with rabbid #2 – cake!
Created and eaten on: 3/17/2010
I was looking for a recipe for simple sponge cake and I found this modified Castella sponge cake recipe. Regular Castella only uses egg, flour, sugar and honey, but this one uses a little bit of butter. Castella was originally brought to Nagasaki by missionaries from Portugal. It’s pretty sweet but also very fluffy and moist inside. I remember eating it as a snack when I was little. (I didn’t take that many pictures of this process because I’m not a good baker, and I was not very confident when I baked this… Maybe I’ll do a how-to on this later when I’m confident enough to do it.)
This was how it looked right after I took the cake out the oven. The first thing I did was check the bottom of the mold to make sure it hadn’t melted.

Because some parts of the mold are deep and some are shallow, the surface puffed up, but I wasn't too concerned.
I just cut the top part off to make the bottom flat.
I turned it upside down, and the cake came out without any problem. I was very happy when I saw this.
Like I mentioned, my boyfriend and I don’t like dessert that’re too sweet, so instead of covering the cake with icing, I decided to use powdered sugar. I put jam inside his mouth, and used Maraschino cherries for his crazy red eyes.
Because the jam was organic, it was a bit darker than I wanted. So I removed some and sprinkled red colored sugar. I also used pink colored sugar for his ears.
This was what the Rabbid looked like in our fridge. Every time I opened the fridge, it made me chuckle.
And we finally cut it into pieces.
After making two desserts, I was ready to have fun with the Rabbid for a main course…

This was part of my “wonderful things” post, but I got sidetracked by other wonderful things and events and plush making, so I couldn’t do this until now. So here I go!
A little while ago, I received an email from someone who works at Ubisoft, the company that created the Rayman Raving Rabbids series. She liked my bento, and asked me if I could make a good use of this.
O_O
It’s a silicon mold of a Rabbid!!! Of course, I gladly accepted her offer. She even included their new DS game “Rabbids Go Home.” I was expecting a smaller version of “Rabbids Go Home” for Wii, but they redesigned Rabbids for DS screen and the mini-games were very different from Wii version. While usual Rabbids games are for multi-players or full of party games, Rabbids Go Home for DS is all about puzzle games. I’ll write more about the game later!
Anyway, the very first thing I thought of making was jello type of food. I was told that the mold was oven-safe, but it didn’t come with any instructions explaining how hot the mold could get, so I was worried and didn’t have the courage to try baking something with it.
My boyfriend and I don’t eat sweets at home that much, and the mold was bigger than I expected. So I decided to make fruity jello type dessert “bavarois.” Bavarois is a French desert made with cream, pureed fruit and gelatin, and is a very popular dessert in Japan. Because it has fruit in it, it is quite refreshing. I wasn’t planning on doing a how-to on this, but this is ridiculously easy, so I’m going to do a quick how-to! (I took the pictures of how-to. Sorry about the quality of the pictures.)

[Strawberry bavarois]
Strawberries – the recipe says 200g, but I just put as much as I wanted
Milk – 1/2 cup
Whipping cream – 1 cup
Sugar – 1/2 cup and 1 TBS
Flavorless gelatin – 3TBS or 3 packets (if you want it softer, or not using a mold, you can put 2 TBS of gelatin instead of 3 TBS)
Hot water – 3/4 cup (150cc)
Splash of lemon (if you have any)
This recipe makes refreshing not-so-sweet bavarois. If you want it sweeter, add more sugar. (Don’t ask me how much, though. It’s up to you!) Or you can indulge yourself and add some whipped cream!
The best part of this recipe is all you need is a blender and a bowl for gelatin.

If you’ve seen this bento, this bento or this bento, you may already know that my boyfriend and I are huge fans of the Behemoth. I was so excited when I saw the teaser trailer for “Game #3″ (working title) last year. They’ve been working on this new game for a while. I even made something like this and this for the birthday of Dan Paladin, the art director of the Behemoth.
On Feb 1st, they finally posted a new trailer with the game’s story, and announced the title of the new game. I give you the “BattleBlock Theater” bento!

My boyfriend owns many DS games, and usually once he plays, he moves onto a new game. But there’s one game he still plays once in a while, and that’s “Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!” (“Elite Beat Agents” in the U.S.)

I can’t believe it’s already December! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
I’d post what I did for Thanksgiving later, but I think I’ll post a kyaraben I made the other day first since I blogged recently.
