PAX Prime 2012: Day 2

November 4, 2012

in PAX,Travel

Sorry for the delay on this blog post. So much awesome stuff has been happening at work but I think I’m finally done with the biggest part. Now all I have to do is wait…

Anyway, let me try finishing this post about an event that happened almost 3 months ago! I was going to write about day 2 and 3 in one mega post but I was worried that it’d take forever to load because of the large number of photos, so I’m splitting it into two posts!

Before you read this, you may want to skim through PAX Prime 2012: Day 0 ~ 1. (It’s mostly photos!)

PAX Prime 2012 Day 2: Saturday, September 1st

Saturday morning, we got breakfast from Specialty’s and headed to our first panel of the day.

Penny Arcade Make a Strip
As per the title, this is a panel where the Penny Arcade guys (Mike and Jerry) make a strip live on the stage.
It’s become a tradition that I take about hundred photos of this panel. It’s really interesting to watch Mike draw and color. A lot of the time he doodles funny stuff and erases it. And yes, there was a Hot Dog Fairy.

A fan requested this to be drawn in the strip, and Mike obliged.

Hot Dog Fairy!

Because of the volume of photos, I had Derek make a video with all the photos I took. I also made a separate Flickr set, so you can check it out if you want. (Go to the bottom of this page for the link)

PAX Prime 2012: Day 0 ~ 1

October 18, 2012

in PAX,Travel

Okay, I think I’m done with all the traveling for this year, and FINALLY I can post about some past events from this year. And yes, I have a couple of food posts & plush posts on the way! But let me first start it with one of my favorite events of the year, PAX Prime.

Every PAX, Prime or East, I’ll always say “This was the best PAX yet!” and this time was no different. During the last PAX Prime, I was offered my dream job at the Behemoth, so it’s hard to top that. But still! Every PAX, I have even more amazing experience than the previous PAX. It just keeps getting better and better, it’s super scary even!

I’d like to thank whomever said “a picture is worth a thousand words” because that’s exactly what I’m doing, with a little notes for the event.

PAX Prime DAY 0: August 30, Thursday
We wanted to have the maximum amount of fun in Seattle before PAX so we left the San Diego Airport at 6:30 am and arrived in Seattle around 9:30 am. Fortunately we were able to check in at the hotel when we got there, so we dropped our stuff off and headed down to the Pike Place Market.

PAX Prime 2012 : Day 0

Our travel companions were a bit tired.

Sushi Kudasai (Sushi please) - Don't know why but we just found this hilarious.

I don't care how touristy this place is. We love it.

The weather couldn’t be better. It was sunny and gorgeous! I think it’s almost always sunny when we go to Seattle for PAX. Lucky us!

I made a “stuffed stuff: making of Raz from Psychonauts” post prior to this. Check it out if you’re interested!

Also, to maximize the enjoyment of reading this post, you should totally get Psychonauts, an awesome action adventure game, which is available on PS2, Xbox on Demand, PSN, Mac and PC!!

We arrived in Seattle in early Thursday afternoon. Usually I have a lot of sewing to do at the hotel during PAX but this time I only had to finish the eyes and mouth. It was quite nice to be able to enjoy Seattle & PAX without worrying too much about the plush.

Because of the large amount of the photos I took while I was making this, I’m splitting the post into two parts!

This is the making of Raz doll, if you’d like to see the finished Raz doll, check out the stuffed stuff: Raz from Psychonauts post!

Every PAX I make something to give away to my favorite people & game developers. I had some projects I was planning to do and I had already bought all the fabric I needed. But due to some unexpected inconveniences, I couldn’t start working on anything until less than one week before PAX. I only had time for one project, so I picked Raz from Psychonauts, probably the most complicated project of all. It was nothing like anything I’ve ever made before.

I actually always wanted to make Raz but I’ve been putting it off because of his complexity and various accessories he has. This PAX Prime would be the first time Double Fine (the studio that made Psychonauts) was going to have a booth and Tim Schafer would be doing a couple of panels. I thought there wouldn’t be any better chance to give Raz to them.

Derek and I got to go to SDCC this year and we were pretty excited. Not just because this was our first SDCC, but I knew the Penny Arcade crew, Scott Kurtz and Kris Straub would be there. My favorite people I always say hi to at PAX.

I initially wasn’t going to make anything but Thursday came and… I changed my mind.

At the time, I only had passes for Friday and Saturday (I ended up getting passes for Sunday later), so it had to be something relatively easy.

Once I decided to make something, it didn’t take too long to pick Mr. Toots from The Trenches created by Scott Kurtz (PvP Online), Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins (Penny Arcade).

The Trenches is a webcomic series about game testers. The posts are submitted anonymously by real game testers, and I enjoy reading them tremendously. If you think game testing is a glorious job where you can get paid by playing video games all day, you might want to start reading those posts. There’s some crazy stuff in there…
