Wow it’s been more than a year since I did a post about my bento sketch book! But it doesn’t mean that I didn’t do any sketches for my other bento. I draw a sketch for almost every bento. Click on the title of the bento to read the post about it, and click on the image to see a bigger version of the sketch on my flickr.
Bento #51: Evangelion PenPen & Lilith
This happens sometimes. I start a very detailed drawing, then decided to change the layout, but I’m too lazy to redo what I already drew, so I leave the detailed drawing as is. In this case, I drew PenPen without having any plan for what to put on the right side. Then I decided to put Lilith so I had to change the layout. I put the sketch sideways because I like PenPen more than Lilith.
This one turned out to be pretty much the same as the sketch. I had to design the frogs by myself which I’m not very good at doing… But everything would be all right as long as Totoro looked like Totoro, right? I considered adding a “Teruteru bozu” which is a ghost-like thing made with tissue paper which you hang by the window to pray for a sunny day. I drew it on the left side of the page but I ended up not using it.
Bento #53: Google Chrome bento
Oh no! I can’t find the sketch of this bento! I’ll add the sketch here when I find it. But until then, I’ll just put the video from the Google Chrome contest.
Sometimes I draw a lot of characters and detailed elements around the actual sketch so I can throw them in if I have extra time (which rarely happens). As you can see, most the time, they won’t make it to the final bento. I also wanted to re-create the scenery from the game but it didn’t quite work out as in the sketch. In the end I just used a bunch of star shaped cutters and carrot flowers to fill the bento. I really wish I planned what to do with the bunny’s body in the sketch though.
I obviously didn’t plan on making the main character that big. It got a lot bigger when I decided to stuff meatballs in it. This is what happens when I don’t plan on what kind of protein (meat or fish) and how to put it in a bento. Also this is another sketch that I drew a lot of characters from the game in the margin. I did manage to squeeze some easy ones into the bento at the last minute! The characters from LocoRoco are so cute and colorful yet very simple. I probably could’ve made more if I had space.

wow, you are really talented!
Your bento’s are just brilliant! I wish I had something more original to say. But truly amazing.
Everything you do is AMAZING!!! I love it! I saw a picture of a Totoro scarf on Etsy and decided to try it at home. I decorated the scarf but I also did a bathrobe, which my son named “Totorobe” lol I would love to show you a picture of it!
That video is so very well done, not to speak of the bento
