Golden Whale BattleBlock Theater
Created and stuffed: September 2009
EDIT: Check out the Behemoth dev blog to see the pictures of Dan with my plushes!
The Golden whale was another plush I made for Dan Paladin’s birthday in addition to the cube head guy Hatty. (See “Cube head guy” post for the details.) The problem for the Golden whale was fabric. I had no idea what kind of gold fabric I could use. Fortunately, I work right by the “Fashion/Garment District” in NYC where there are tons of fabric stores around. The first fabric I got was very thin gold fabric. I don’t know what to call it, but it wasn’t stretchy. I realized that it’d probably be a bit too thin for my sewing machine to handle, so I looked for a different fabric. I went to a spandex store (yes, it’s called Spandex World), and found a perfect fabric! I had never worked with spandex, but it was pretty cheap so I decided to give it a try.
I drew a sketch first, and I decided to make it with four pieces. Two sides and two pieces for the middle (shiny part for the top and non-shiny part for his stomach). Then I cut the fabric, pinned it and started sewing. I had no clue how much it’d stretch, but when I make plush, I usually just make it anyway, look at the finished piece, fix the patterns, and make it again. Trial and error works for me. It didn’t take too long to finish the body, and oh my goodness the shape was perfect!
I didn’t even use a special sewing machine. I use a standard Singer sewing machine. I just changed the sewing setting to “zig-zag”, and it worked very well with spandex. I made a pattern for his tail fin and fins, cut fabric, sewed them, stuffed them and sewed them on the body.
I used the same buttons I used for the square head guy for his eyes. For the lines on his stomach, I tried sewing these very cute orange sequins I got at a trimming store on, but I was in a rush so it came out a little sloppy.
His mouth was orange/brown, and I really didn’t have any good fabric in the color, so I ended up using felt. I wasn’t happy about this choice. His mouth looked so out of place compared to the rest of his shiny body. I’ll probably try making him again soon.
As soon as my boyfriend saw the whale, he was holding him in the air, making him float around like he does in the game.
The only thing I regret was that when I used the opposite side of the gold spandex for the stomach part, I couldn’t draw a line with the regular wax pen I usually use, and I didn’t have a fabric marker, so I used a ballpoint pen… It wasn’t visible at first, but the ink slowly seeped onto the surface and you could see a line across his stomach later. T_T
This project took about 7~8 hours. (including the time to make patterns) Not really bad for making something I had no clue how to make using a fabric I had never used before, eh? Maybe next one, I’ll change the fabric for the mouth and maybe even somehow try to add a blowhole!
My boyfriend took TONS of picture of this guy, so please check out my flickr page for more pictures!

I LOVE THIS!
Would you consider posting your patterns? I’m sure they’d be well-appreciated as all your plushies are adorable. A couple of people I know would probably die happy if I made this for them.
