This isn’t a bento, but I really liked how it turned out and it was easy, so I’m going to post it!
Like I mentioned, my bento caught up with my blog, and I didn’t make bento for Saturday… So I was thinking about doing a dinner blog. But I got up earlier than usual for a Saturday morning and went to the city to shop for a new game (”Tatsunoko VS Capcom for Wii
) today, so when I came home, I was pretty tired and decided to take a nap.
Not a good idea. orz
I wanted to cook salmon, but the fish market was already closed. So I got online and looked for an easy recipe for the dinner and found this!

My gods! My blog has finally caught up with my current bento!! I was wondering when it’d happen when I started the blog about 3 months ago. It’s sooner than I thought.. probably due to lack of bento-ing the past month or two. I’d like to keep my bento blog 3 times a week with a how-to on Sunday, but I’m only human. So if I don’t have any bento to blog, I’ll probably blog about random stuff like my other hobbies, such as making plush, crafts and such.
When I was writing a post about Bento #36: Penny Arcade robot bento, I realized something. It was so strange that I’ve never even thought of this before, but Penny Arcade robot has a striking resemblance to a character from an anime/manga/live action show which my boyfriend also liked.

“Dai Mahou Touge” aka “Magical Witch Punie-chan”, is an anime show made by and for super anime nerds, yet even if you aren’t an anime nerd, you’ll still enjoy it. My boyfriend likes this show so much that he even did a review on this show before.
His favorite character in this show is Paya-tan. Looks like a cute mascot in any magical girl anime shows, but so NOT.
I’ve always wanted to make a Paya-tan bento, but I couldn’t think of any good way to make it because Paya-tan was the only non-human character in Dai Mahou Touge.
I think I’ve mentioned this before but, there are so many characters I want to make bento of including Paya-tan. Coming up with a character I want to make isn’t that hard, but finding something to go with the main character is. Then I remembered my favorite episode, about curry at a food stand at a school festival. This particular episode was about a school festival, like any other anime. But instead of showing the drama or trouble between students, the majority of the episode was focused on curry at a particular food stand. The curry at the stand was so popular that Punie-chan’s rival and her gang went to find out what the secret was. There they witnessed a horrifying ceremony held by the vegetables for the curry.

My boyfriend has been playing a lot of older games lately. He was telling me that there were some games he never actually finished, and wants to finish them before he bought any new games. One of the games happened to have cute fleshy bug looking creatures a.k.a headcrabs.

If you’re a gamer, you must’ve heard of a site called Penny Arcade. This webcomic focuses on video games and gaming culture, written by Jerry Holkins and illustrated by Mike Krahulik. They’re known to be very honest and blunt about video games and other game reviews, and that’s why gamers love them. They got so big that they have their own convention, called Penny Arcade Expo every year, which I’m probably going for work this year.
The Penny Arcade comic became so huge that they have their own game called “On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness” and released it for Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation 3 and PC last year. So far two episodes have been released. My boyfriend, being the good gamer that he is, checks the site quite often and enjoyed their game, so I decided to make a character from the game.
It’s an adventure/RPG game, and pretty simple and short, yet very entertaining. In the game, you, Tycho and Gabe (characters from the webcomic) go around beating up bad guys, solving mysteries and what not. (awesome description, eh?) Some of these “bad guys” are characters from the webcomic. Since I want to keep my blog family friendly, I will not write his real name on my blog, but there is this robot that is described to be “a small, robotic juicer with an unusual means of extracting juice.”

hooray for a full-size fridge!

I apologize for not blogging on this past Saturday and Sunday. I couldn’t, because… my boyfriend and I moved into a new place!
We had no internet for 3 whole days… D: Well, a cable guy was supposed to come to our place to hook up internet on Saturday (the day we moved in), but for some strange reason, he came early and we missed him. By “early” we mean like 3 days early. But because of that, we could focus on settling down, so it worked out.
We hired the world’s fastest movers and our move (from my place and his place to our new place) was done in 3 hours! My boyfriend wrote a review about them on his blog.
Anyway, we’ve been up until 2~3 in the morning almost every night since we moved, unpacking, cleaning, moving and organizing stuff around, so no blog today either… BUT! I’ll be cooking & making bento again really soon. (Hopefully this week) Especially now that we have a full-size fridge! I can’t wait to fill our new full-size fridge with food.
Hooray for a full-size fridge!!!!!

We put a white board on our new fridge. ("Dude", a character from my boyfriend's webcomic by him, "Cat" by me)
Valentine Meringue Mario Mushrooms!

I really wanted to do this how-to on the 8th, but I was attending NY comicon, and just didn’t have the time, so I’m doing it today!
Last year, our company decided to have a pot-luck style office Christmas party. I knew a lot of people were making entrees, so I wanted to make a dessert. Then I remembered the meringue mushrooms I’d had at my friend’s party before. It looked just like mushrooms but it was made out of meringue! I made bunch of meringue mushrooms and people loved them!
Meringue mushrooms are very sweet, so I thought it’d be perfect for Valentine’s day. Just normal meringue mushroom would be boring… so I decided to make it into Valentine meringue mushroom for a nerdy boyfriend!

[Valentine Meringue Mario Mushrooms (this recipe makes about 24~26 mushrooms)]
- 2 egg whites (room temperature)
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup white sugar (or powder sugar if you have any)
- marshmallow
- vanilla extract (if you have any)
- red food coloring (green for 1up mushroom)
- chocolate (baking chocolate is preferred, but you can just use a normal bar chocolate bar)
- white icing (I used the one that comes in a tube)
- a round tip with a pastry bag (or gallon size Ziplock bag. That’s what I used.)
- toothpick

I was going to do this bento when I made Toon Link bento, but I ended up not putting him because I ran out of the time. When my boyfriend was going around in the office to show his bento to co-workers, I was telling my friend that I was going to put this guy in the same bento. That friend, a huge gamer, said “No, he deserves his own bento.”

NY Comic-con! Index! Wired interview!

I apologize for the lack of how-to’s in the past couple of weeks. Last weekend, I had a leakage from the ceiling at my apartment, and spent days cleaning up my place. This weekend I was working at NY Comic-con, so no how-to again this week. Working at conventions is fun but standing on my feet all day isn’t…
So instead of how-to, I added an index page on my blog!!!! Yeah, not very exciting, I know. The blog was getting messy, so I wanted to make it easier for people to find a specific bento.
Another news is that I did an interview for Wired.com, and you can see it on here! I was pleasantly surprised that the article was a lot longer than I expected. I’m a little embarrassed but the editor Scott did a good job and wanted everyone to read it.
Oh, and I realized that I somehow managed to publish my very first bento in 2009, Calvin and Hobbes bento, privately… (so it wasn’t visible to public)
I realized when I was publishing Battlestar Galactica bento. Wooops!
By the way, I’d like to thank everyone for encouraging comments about the leaking ceiling/flood damage! It was more like an excuse post for not doing how-to, and I didn’t expect I’d get any comments. The leaking has stopped, and nothing important was damaged, so it’s all good.
My blog is almost caught up with my current bento and I might have to start doing bento-related blog between my actual bento posts. I hope I can make bento sometime this week… before I move to a new place this weekend!!
That’s right, my boyfriend and I are moving in together on February 14th, and we’re super excited!
I can’t wait to make more bento in a new kitchen with full-size fridge!
