After Christmas, I wanted to make one more bento before the year was over, but my boyfriend and I were already on holiday vacation. I was thinking of making a bento to eat at home, but my boyfriend had to go see his family for a couple of days, so I decided to make a bento for him to eat on the bus. Since I didn’t have work, I wanted to make this last bento of the year something very special.

*This is a two-box bento, so I’m doing two posts on this.

Right side - Aaron, Emil, and Tzippy

After I posted “how to make a Wall-E sandwich” on December 21, I started getting a lot of traffic to my blog, my flickr and my boyfriend’s flickr. At the time, I was still writing about my older bento on my blog and using my flickr to post pictures for my blog, so I decided to make a bento for people who were visiting my boyfriend’s flickr blog to see my latest bento. My boyfriend and I were on a vacation this day, but it was a Christmas eve, and I wanted to make something special. Which character did I pick?

I felt defeated after making my Moyashimon bento. I wanted to make a kyaraben, but I was feeling lazy (as usual)… So I started thinking of what I could make with what I had in the fridge with a minimum amount of effort.

how to make Japanese style hamburg

I often use “Japanese style hamburg” for my bento. That’s because it’s just so easy to make different shapes with it. Sometimes it’s shaped like Makkurokurosuke, sometimes it shaped like a cube (see “Super Smash Bros. Brawl bento”, “Professor Layton bento”), sometimes it’s shaped like a rabbid. (see “Raving Rabbids bento” ) I call it “Japanese style hamburg”, but I guess it’s a lot like Salisbury steak. I got a couple of emails and also a comment asking me how to make them, so I’m going to do how to make Japanese style hamburg today.

You can find many recipes for Japanese style hamburg online, but I’ll post my version of hamburg recipe.

[How to make Japanese style hamburg] (makes 8~9 hamburgs)
- 1lb ground beef (or ground beef and pork mix)
- 1 egg
- 2 slices of white bread or 1/2 cup of panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 1/5 cup of milk if you have any.

[Hamburg sauce] (If you want)
- 2/3 cup of ketchup
- 1/4 cup of Bull-Dog Chunou Sauce or BBQ sauce
- 1.5 tbs soysauce
- 3 tbs sugar

bento #29: Moyashimon

My boyfriend and I watch anime at home regularly. Sometimes it’s new, sometimes it’s old. There was this one anime that came out in Japan two years ago, and I had always wondered about what it was about. Well, I knew what it was about, because the title explained it all, but I wasn’t quiet sure how they did it, and why it was so popular in Japan.

The anime show is called “Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture.” It’s a story about a first year college student at an agriculture university who has an ability to see and communicate with bacteria and microbes. No ninja or robots. It’s a very average looking anime show with,,, AMAZINGLY CUTE BACTERIA and MICROBES!!!

I think I’ve mentioned on my blog before, but I don’t like making human characters for my bento. One of the reasons is I think it’s a bit creepy to eat human characters. I know many people will say “And it’s not creepy to eat Totoro???”, but it’s just something about human characters that weird me out a bit. Also another reason (the main reason) is that it’s really hard to make food look like them!! Also I prefer my bento to be 3-D than rather than 2-D, so I usually pick non-human characters that I can “sculpt” with food. But just like Professor Layton and Cooking Mama, this was very special, so I made an exception.

When the trailer for “Wall-E” came out, my boyfriend was really excited about it. I’ve watched many different kinds of teasers, but all I thought “Okay… So, it’s Johnny Five in CG.” Even thought it’s by Pixar, I really didn’t expect anything at all.

Today’s how-to requires basic Asian ingredients, so it may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy cooking & eating sticky rice (Japanese, Chinese, Korean rice), this is a great way to make a main character for your bento!

[How to make a Totoro rice ball] (used in “Sleeping Totoro”, “Flying Totoro”)
- rice mixed with ground black sesame seed and salt (see “How to dye rice naturally”)
- plain rice
- seaweed
- cheese
- black sesame seed
– plastic wrap, scissors

I’m going to do two non-bento food for today’s post. They aren’t really “bento” by themselves, but if you surround them with egg flowers (“how to make a sunflower”), sausage flowers (“how to make sausgae flowers”) vegetable flowers (“how to make vegetable flowers”), egg chicken (“how to make an egg chicken”), etc… they can turn into the main character in your bento!

I did “how to make turkey sandwich and turkey rice ball with turkey” for Thanksgiving on my blog.

This isn’t another excuse for not doing a bento blog today, but this definitely deserves an exclusive post.

A friend of mine, whom I’ve known for 7~8 years since art school & works at the same company gave me & my boyfriend belated Christmas presents yesterday.

I opened the package, and I could not believe my eyes.

It was a hardcover book of my bento!!!!!!!!!!!
