bento #9: Mini-moose

November 27, 2008

in bento

When I was looking at the pictures of Piggy & GIR bento, I thought that if I had made the meatball into mini-moose (also from Invader ZIM), it would’ve been perfect… And I made Japanese style hamburg (non-bun hamburgers) the night before, so I decided to try it.

Bento#9: Mini-moose
Created and eaten on: 10/6/2008

I didn’t have the time to make a full-kyaraben, so I put hamburg on fried rice mixed with ketchup and veggies (a.k.a.omurice). For some more color I added asparagus, ham, and kamaboko (fish cake). Then I made moose antlers, eyes and tooth with kamaboko.

I just freehand cut out kamaboko for its antlers.

I freehand cut out kamaboko for its antlers.

The mini-moose on the left is also known as “Squeaky Moose” (He squeaks when squeezed), and the one on the right is from “The Most Horrible Christmas Ever” episode.

I don’t know if you can call this a kyaraben (more like a left-over bento), but I got compliments on this from people who’ve never watched Invader ZIM. :) So “putting eyes and mouth on food” is always a good trick for a quick kyaraben if you don’t have too much time in the morning!

Mini-moose:
- Japanese style hamburg
- kamaboko (fish cake) for its antlers and eyes
- seaweed for its mouth and eyes

Other food:
- fried rice mixed with ketchup, edamame, corn and carrot
- kamaboko
- asparagus wrapped with ham

Putting eyes and a mouth on food to make me look like I know what I’m doing is an excellent idea… And then when people ask me what it is I’ll ask them if they’re kidding and when they really don’t know I’ll tell them that it’s ONLY the most famous character from a Japanese cartoon. It’s called a complex Japanese name that you can’t pronounce. But oh, you don’t get that channel? Well, let me tell you, the resemblance is AMAZING!
