Flat vegetable flowers are great for dressing up your bento to finish up.
Put them on broccoli, on rice, on sandwiches, etc… anywhere you want. It adds a nice finishing touch and will definitely cutify your bento.
Carrot flower:
- Carrrot
- Cheese for #2 (optional)

I’ve done “how to make a sunflower” before, but today I’ll do how to make generic flowers. These flowers are less-complicated than sunflowers, and you just need one ingredient.

When I made my first Totoro bento, I used bonito flakes for his gray body color, but it didn’t look quite right. And I thought, “What food is gray?” The first food that came to my mind was konnyaku. I searched web for “Totoro made out of konnyaku”, but to my surprise I couldn’t find anyone using konnyaku for Totoro… so of course, I had to try it.

This isn’t a bento, but since it’s anime-inspired food, I’ll post it along with my usual bento blog anyway.
If you’re a fan of Laputa: Castle in the Sky by Studio Ghibli, you’re probably drooling now.

When I was looking at the pictures of Piggy & GIR bento, I thought that if I had made the meatball into mini-moose (also from Invader ZIM), it would’ve been perfect… And I made Japanese style hamburg (non-bun hamburgers) the night before, so I decided to try it.

I’ve been wanting to use renkon for background, but Bento#6 Kaonashi bento didn’t work out too well.
One day, after eating lots of renkon, I finally realized what it reminded me of… It’s the trees in the Sea of Decay from Nausicaa of the valley of the wind!
But since I’m not really into making human characters for bento, I picked Ohmu – the gigantic, armored, caterpillar-like insects to be the main character for this bento.

Thanksgiving is coming soon! So, on top of my usual how-to, I decided to do a turkey kyaraben.
I’m not sure if everyone can get Japanese rice (sticky rice), so I’m going to do a sandwich version as well.
[Rice ball turkey]
- One sheet of seaweed
- rice
- two different kind of cheese
- ham
- small piece of carrot
- black sesame seed

Now you can make your own mini-Totoro!
I’m using quail eggs because they sell quail eggs at local supermarkets by where I live. They are about the price of normal egg, so some people might find it expensive. But quail eggs are very good for bento, and I always have them in my fridge. But if you can’t find it, you can use a normal size egg.
[How to make Mini-Totoro]
- quail egg
- kamaboko
- sesame seed or seaweed

Makkurokurosuke and mini-Totoro can come in super handy when you’re making a Miyazaki film themed bento. They are so easy to make and small enough to fill the space in a bento.
They may be too easy to do how-to on, but I thought I’d just do it anyway.
[Makkurokurosuke ver.1]
- rice
- seaweed (1/4 sheet)
- kamaboko (fish cake) or cheese if you don’t have kamaboko

Last bento was a bit dark overall, so I wanted to make something with a little more color this time.
I liked how GIR came out in my Happy Bee & GIR bento I made before, so I decided to make him again.
